Asynchronous Series
— Fine Art Photography
We were offered the opportunity to photograph the human form as a studio exercise.
The male model was booked the week before the female model, so I tried to develop a concept for these images that made use of the asynchronous timing of the schedule.
I decided to use these photographs explore the similar, increasingly asynchronous nature of our interactions and relationships in a world where digital and online solutions are regularly offered as convenient substitutes for being physically present with another human. I wonder if something subtle and possibly vital ends up being lost in translation?
Process
To create my final photographs, I asked the models to duplicate reference images of couples embracing. I designed the lighting to differentiate the models from one another, and this allowed me to layer pairs of images in Photoshop, creating ghostly echos of physical interaction.
The models had to leave space for, lean in to or imagine holding their absent partner.
The resulting final images have an awkward, slightly disconnected feel to them. Hands don’t quite fall on shoulders, arms hover rather than drape and facial expressions are slightly vacant without another pair of eyes to gaze into.
