State of the Nation –
Press Photography Deadline

David Thomas (47) spends extra quality time with his kids.

As a FIFO worker who's job is based in Melbourne, David has been locked out of the state he works in for 12 of the last 24 months.

He's made the choice to stay at home with his family despite the reduction to his income, because going to work would mean months on the wrong side of a closed border and expensive hotel quarantine to return.

Kids Business as Usual.

Small children play, unbothered by the signage above them stating social distancing requirements for the playground area.

Saturday morning Karate class.

Socially distanced parents watch on as Sensei Craig teaches the Junior Dragons class.

Queensland has been lucky to avoid extended lockdowns and restrictions, so very little has changed for these families.

Maddy Thomas (11) picks tomatoes in the backyard.

Large numbers of Australian families chose to become more self sufficient during the nationwide lockdown in 2020, and it's a habit that has stuck for many.

State of the Nation –
Press Photography Deadline

This body of work was the product of a simulated press deadline.

We were emailed the following brief with a 12hr time limit to produce a collection of four or more images.

“State of the Nation”

Since the start of Covid 19 we have had to live with disruption and lockdowns.

This change to what is considered our normal daily lives/routine may have altered what we/society consider important.

Document our current attitudes/beliefs and values in 4 images.

I really enjoyed this task, however don’t ever ask me to submit something at 12pm. Apparently several of us read that as midnight … not midday!
