Seeking Shelter

Garbage Ghost Kids
– Fine Art Photography

These images were created as the result of an open ended brief to produce two fine art photographs.

My concept is based around the story of a possible apocalyptic future, where the children of climate change live like wild animals, scavenging for materials from the piles of garbage we have discarded. They search for food and shelter in the abandoned places left by past generations.

I wanted to portray an eerie, empty world with fleeting glimpses of these abandoned children inhabiting the edges of our built environment. I hope this portrayal will evoke a desire in the viewer to protect these children by changing our course to mitigate climate change.

I am particularly interested in telling stories about climate change, as I feel the discourse has become confusing and politicised. I have young children and worry about what the planet will be like to live on as they get older.

I believe that people naturally understand important information when it’s delivered in a narrative format. I also feel that the old adage of ‘a picture paints a thousand words’ is very true.

I hope that a simple emotive story, told through images can be a more effective call to action than the sometimes overwhelming volumes of scientific data, blaming and shaming and political avoidance that we have become accustomed to.

Process

The final images are composited in Photoshop from multiple shots captured on location. I ended up going back for several evenings of trial and error with my models and assistant to get the ghosting effect I was hoping for.

I used a combination of long shutter speeds, ND filters and hand-held lighting using multiple flash exposures and light painting with a torch to achieve exposure where I wanted it.
